Chia Chia developed interest in Chinese Medicine at the age of 10.  Her uncle, Dr. Gou Chen Cheng, is an important family member as well as mentor.  Dr. Cheng was the first to model the lifestyle of natural first, drugs last.

During her Masters program at Pacific College, she studied with Uncle Chen on the weekends.  During her visits to his clinic she received additional training for treating back pain, neck pain, and internal disorders. Uncle Chen, aka Dr. Cheng also instilled in Chia Chia the importance of combining professionalism and expertise with unlimited compassion.

Her extensive background in Chinese Medicine and manual therapy assist her in providing the highest quality complementary care to her patients. Chia Chia supports her patients in achieving their health and wellness goals with consistent follow-up and ongoing communication throughout the treatment process.

A message from Chia Chia:  “I believe in nature first, drugs last. Acupuncture balances energy. That’s why it can address so many different conditions.  I recommend  nutritional supplementation and herbal therapy using primarily two companies, Standard Process and MediHerb. Since 2014 I have taken these products daily, with fabulous results for my own wellbeing.”

Shelby Taylor-Goalby reflects, “Acupuncture offers immediate feedback to me while I am still on the table. I can feel how my muscles and joints relax after Chia Chia begins the treatment. Each session increases my body awareness while helping me discover how my body reacts to stress.”

  • 2000 – present Professional development trainings on chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, nutritional/herbal therapy, micro-needle treatments for face and hair
  • 2019 Certified in Natural Functional Medicine
  • 1999 MTOM (Master of Traditional Oriental Medicine) from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (San Diego), a four year, full-time graduate program with over 3000 hours of classroom instruction and clinical hours combined.

As an intern at the UCSD’s Sports Medicine RIMAC Center, Chia Chia learned how to blend Chinese and sports medicine and treated collegiate athletes with great success.

Chia Chia recruited and interviewed participants for two national research programs, headed by the SDSU Foundation. As research assistant she learned strategies to improve the practitioner-patient experience.

Chia Chia Cheng, L.Ac. has attended numerous seminars for continuing education. These include a lecture series on balancing the body using abdominal reflexes with Kiiko Matsumoto, L.Ac. and Monica Kobelyaka, L.Ac. with the focus on balancing the nervous system.

Chia Chia is always looking for ways to help people feel better. She added NRT (Nutrition Response Testing) to her practice as a way to determine with more accuracy what supplements the body (and mind) needs to heal itself. Using NRT also enables her to determine whether people have sensitivities to food or chemicals. NRT can detect root causes of digestive issues.

Early on in her practice Chia Chia developed a passion for working with people’s bodies in a hands on manner. She attended Energetics of Structural Balance, a lecture series by Matt Callison, L.Ac., specific to injuries of the arms and legs, back, and sacrum. The treatment of orthopedic disorders using motor point therapy and manual therapy,  combined with the principles of Chinese Medicine, distinguishes Chia Chia’s treatment style from those of other practitioners.  People who have a strong mind body connection appreciate what she offers.

Chia Chia completed a year long training in functional medicine.  She obtained a certification of natural functional medicine (CNFM) with Michael Gaeta L.Ac. during her training in the Clinicians Mastermind Circle (CMC).

Functional Medicine is a medical approach that uses blood and hair analysis, along with nutritional assessments to determine what nutrients the body requires for healing and attaining balance.  Chia Chia uses nutritional supplementation and herbal therapy to support wellness and recovery for her patients.

She also takes supplements and herbs daily for her own wellness. Chia Chia has been successful in providing thyroid and immune support for herself without the use of pharmaceutical drugs. She hasn’t used antihistamines in years!

Chia Chia has great interest in all aspects of men and women’s health, with a special emphasis on immune support, reducing chronic inflammation, improving digestion, fitness, and mental health. She has successfully treated many patients dealing with a wide spectrum of issues. She is passionate about supporting each individual in maintaining their active lifestyles for optimal health, happiness, and wellbeing.

Outside of the clinic, Chia Chia supports her own health and vitality through Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dancing Nia, strength conditioning, Pilates, capoeira, and spending time in nature. She approaches each day with humor and is known for her boisterous laugh. When she’s not outdoors on a paddle board, she can be found engaging in her lifelong hobby–composing hand-written letters to friends and family.

Chia Chia is trilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, and English.  She is learning Brazilian Portugues to stimulate her linguistic neurons.

“Living well and being healthy is more than what you look like and whether you’re still wearing the same size as you did when you were 20. Wellness is the intersection of mind, body and spirit. These make up the three pillars. What feeds one pillar will nurture the other two.

Your body is an efficient machine. It’s built to perform. It can take a lot of neglect and still function, taking years to develop disease or pain.

The good news is that your body has an incredible ability to heal itself. When given the necessary ingredients and support, your body can achieve balance and initiate new growth.

As I learn more about my body, I have been able to heal faster and also avoid chronic injury. Injury over time can lead to disease. Once I made the connection between mind, body, and spirit, I felt an increase in my vitality.

Reducing your pain is the first and crucial step, but not the only thing I do. When we work together, I will teach you how to care for yourself. My goal is to create an independence where you will have the confidence to heal yourself, naturally.”
