I’m Soooo Chinese

I was going to write about how security, guidance, wisdom and power manifested for me while SIP.  But I thought, let’s shake it up a bit and save the deep dive for next time.

All my life I’ve been asked by folks if I’m Filipina, Indonesian, Hawaiian, Ecuadorian, or Thai.  Even by Chinese folks.  Especially by Chinese folks.  Go figure.

I immigrated to California when I was 7 years old.  I no longer get the “You speak English so well!” accolades.  We have, as a society, become more sophisticated.

After 4 decades of assimilation I started thinking that I had lost the characteristics which made me the Chinese kid in 2nd grade who didn’t speak a lick of English.  Until a friend pointed out the obvious.

I’m big into lists these days.  Here’s my latest.

Top 10 Undeniable Hints That I’m SO Chinese

  1. I have indoor shoes that are different from my outdoor shoes.
  2. Jackie Chan is my hero.
  3. When my ESL brain asks, How you say this in English?
  4. I make fried rice for my kids.  Like 3-4 times a week.
  5. I put soy sauce in everything I make.  Including nachos.
  6. I prefer eating with chop sticks.  Unless it’s a bowl of cereal, of course.
  7. I hang my clothes to dry even though I have a dryer.
  8. I speak Chinese to my kids, who reply with “Speak English, Mom!”
  9. I’m a terrible driver.
  10. I practice Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and am an acupuncturist.

[Tangent]

I started a modified Purification Program on Monday of this week.  I figured why wait when I already had some of the kit in my cabinet.

I realize it’s a hard sell right now.  The few things you can find comfort in these days while SIP is feeling close to people you care about, going outside for fresh air, and pleasure foods.  Shoot, I got a bag of Flaming Hot Cheetos waiting for me.  Somewhere.
